2023 Alf Foundation Grantee Shelby Lindsley

Shelby Lorraine Lindsley (b. 2000, they/she) is an MFA ’24 candidate at Otis College of Art and Design. She grounds their work within conceptual art, using her artwork to reference events from their life.

Lindsley's art practice is fluid, due to revolving around different interpretations and state of minds based on her lived experiences. The theme of their art focuses on analyzing these lived events from an out-of-body perspective. In addition to this perspective, she also considers the micro- and macro-level influences on decisions, ranging from how culture, family, and identity can impact a decision one makes.

She feels that she inhabits a “third space” between different systematic structures, where they can be protected or need to defend their being from the dualistic structures. This comes from their research in Gloria Anzaldua's Borderlands/La Frontera. These structures can range from race, gender, or sexuality, allowing them to freely explore or experiment within the third space. Thus, their art provides them with a space to present who they are, displaying their internal feelings as a form of affirmation.
