The Martha Alf Foundation Launches; Partners with KOHN Gallery, Los Angeles, Muralist Kent Twitchell, Otis College of Art and Design and UCLA
Los Angeles, Ca., March 26, 2021 — The Martha Alf Foundation is pleased to announce its establishment to honor the legacy of Martha Alf (1930-2019), the nationally celebrated, Los Angeles-based artist. Best known for her critically acclaimed toilet paper roll or “cylinder” paintings and pastel drawings of pears, Alf’s career spanned five decades. She earned her Master of Fine Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), under the tutelage of William Brice, Richard Diebenkorn, and Lee Mullican. Her work was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial and was represented by Newspace gallery, Los Angeles for more than a decade as well as Jan Baum Gallery.
Alf has exhibited nationally and her work is collected by major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Portland Art Museum; San Diego Museum of Art; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; San Jose Museum of Art as well as numerous private collections.
Kohn Gallery, Los Angeles is representing the Estate of Martha Alf and opened an exhibition of her works on March 5, 2021. The beautifully curated show features early landscapes, portraiture and still life. From the irreverence of Pop to the monolith of Minimalism, Alf embodies wide-ranging influences in an utterly emotive and beautiful manner, and this work is now ripe for rediscovery.”
The Martha Alf Foundation is excited to launch a new mural project with artist Kent Twitchell, famous for his larger-than-life realist mural portraits and drawings of artists, such as Lita Albuquerque, Charles White, and Ed Ruscha. The project is scheduled to be completed and on view in late summer 2021.
In addition, the Foundation has partnered with UCLA and Otis College of Art and Design to provide scholarships to nurture the development of visual art students in Southern California. Grants are awarded based on exceptional merit and financial need. To view the inaugural grantees and to learn
