Yi Gao (b. 1988, China) is a 2023 MFA candidate with a concentration in painting at UCLA. With a background in traditional Chinese painting, her mixed-media works on paper assemble figurative narratives drawn from subconscious memory, the exploration of female migration history, and classical mythology.
She addresses the confrontation that arises when women are pulled by both their commitment to traditional family concepts and the challenges of modern life couples with the immigrant experience.
Gao’s recent works observe and reflect the current state of human beings in the process of rapid change under the impact of globalization.
